Story from a mother of a Service Recipient about finding her daughter’s forever home at Quality Care Services…

Many years ago… When I was a teenager, I went to Cambridge to a Home for handicapped and special needs adults… as a part of a church group. Cambridge was an “Institution” setting. That Institutional setting was all that was available for young adults with disabilities living outside of their homes at that time. I spent the day visiting with the young adults from that facility and talking to parents that were there that day visiting their child. Sadly, one mom was sobbing as she told me that she felt the “Institution” was horrible… and went on to share sad stories of abuse and neglect. She also shared with me feelings of extreme guilt that she was no longer able to care for her now adult child, but the conditions at the institution caused her many sad and sleepless nights. She felt helpless as there were no other alternatives for her child. I left with sadness in my heart for that mom, for those young adults that lived at that “Institution”, and the lack of choices available to them at that time (the year was about 1966). It was an experience I will never forget!!!

Little did I know at that time, that I would someday have a child of my own with a disability. Little did I know that my life’s path would allow me the privilege that mother never knew and never had. “We Have Come a Long Way Baby” is certainly the phrase that comes to my mind.

I have witnessed many changes in the last 50 years. I was approached by Trish Schwartz one Sunday morning at McMillan’s restaurant (which has since gone out of business). She got to know my daughter and told me about group homes her son had set up, called “Quality Care”. She gave me his number. And though girls were not a part of his program yet, after a few months things began to happen and Julie moved into the Serenity House with 3 other girls. It has been a journey of growth and support all the way!

My daughter now works at a job in the community, has friends to socialize with, participates in several Special Olympics Sport, she makes meals, is quite independent, and most of all feels good about her life. Quality Care makes sure she is being supported when and where she needs it. I can’t help but think about that mother I met so many years ago. I know she is looking down and smiling at me now, knowing that we are the lucky ones, who get to experience all the supports that she wished for her daughter some 50 years ago!!!

Sincerely + gratefully submitted
